PAUL K. LOONEY

is an Artist based in Tuscaloosa

I haven't always been able to globe trot for the benefit of my art. Throughout my prior career of 30 years in theatre, a visual sense always proved to be my most dynamic (and expressive) tool, so it is only natural that it helps me excel in my return to painting. I strive to depict scenes in ways that illuminate the reasons for my attraction.

While my work is representational, I continue to be influenced most by impressionists. For me, it is not so much a question of faithful representation of images but using visual tools (color, line, mass, texture) to create a spontaneous record of my feelings at the moment of creation. Through my work, we will connect (the artist and the viewer), regardless of my intent.

If I (the artist) am successful, the viewer (upon encountering my creation) will share my sensations and an unspoken understanding will occur between us.

BIOGRAPHY

After a long absence from the studio, I have finally returned to my original passion: painting. Throughout an extended career in theatre, my visual sense proved to be my most dynamic (and expressive) tool so it was only natural that (given the chance) I would ultimately return to painting. This website gives me, the painter, a more personal way to share my view of the world while continuing my “conversation” with audiences.

Drawing on a vast inventory of images that interest and move me, I strive to depict them in ways that illuminate the reasons for my attraction.  While my work is, on the main, representational, I would hardly consider myself a realist.  I am most influenced by impressionists.  For me, it is not so much a question of faithful representation of images but using visual tools (color, line, mass, texture) to create a complete and honest record of my feelings.  Through my work, we will connect (the artist and the viewer) regardless of my intent.  If I (the artist) am successful, the viewer (upon encountering my work) will share my sensations and an unspoken understanding will occur between us.

Presently, I am drawing inspiration from travels around the world from Europe to Asia and Africa. I use photographs and sketches, gathered on these travels, as resources.  I’m particularly interested in off-beaten paths or familiar vistas from unexpected points of view.  I also get satisfaction in drawing and painting the human form; particularly dancers in unguarded, private moments.  I feel one of my strongest and most expressive tools is color…vibrant, rich color.  I also enjoy exploring texture and feel the tactile quality of a medium is an important contributor to the viewer’s experience.  Of singular importance to me, however, is the notion that my work must be painterly illustrating a personal point of view.  I hope my work interests you and brings you joy!
